William PONSONBYShowband, Letterkenny

Related: Denver, Rascals, Envoys, Blueglows

Mention the name Ponsonby in the North West or farther afield in Scotland during Lent in the 1950s and '60s and you will get immediate reaction from other musicians who played in that era. Primarily a dance band, Willie, Jimmy,Terry, Eamonn, Dinny and their sister Ina became well-known for good music and later they would like many others adopt the word 'showband' into their repertoire. They would also introduce many fine local artists like Evelyn (Envoys) Hugh Mc Lean (Blueglows) and not to mention their own famous siblings Ted Pat, Billy and Don who would start the Denver Showband and later the well known Rascals pop band. Sadly all the older generation have passed on but in the younger Ponsonbys they have left us a great legacy from a local family steeped in music. They will never be forgotton.
