The Wheels

More cuttings and Tamara Rossi, 2nd generation

Here's a question for your readers. I grew up in Derry and often visited Portrush as a child. I remember, as if it was yesterday, on one occasion being incredibly excited to see and hear for the first time real live music. Being very young, possibly still in single figures, I was with my parents. We walked past the Arcadia Ballroom towards the East Strand, and to my amazement I heard this loud music ahead. When we got closer I could see a rock band playing on the beach. It was so exciting! It was The Wheels. I wonder if anybody else remembers this? It was probably about 1964.

Some years later I spent two years at college in Portrush in 1978-79 and worked at Chester’s New Arcadia where we put on some great concerts, including the Undertones, the Stranglers and Ian Dury & the Blockheads, but that’s another story altogether.

Best wishes, Bryan Ford
